Asylum Causal Enchantment Series K A Tucker Books

(Original review posted on Rabid Reads.com in 2014)In the last two days, I re-read the first in this series, Anathema, and enjoyed it all over again. Then I read this one and also enjoyed it. Anyone that has read the Ten Tiny Breaths series by this author, already knows what a good author K.A.Tucker is, so it was a no-brainer that I was going to read this series. She is becoming one of my go to authors for sure.

Evangeline is an eighteen year old orphan who got involved with Sophie in the last book. Sophie is a witch turned vampire, that pretty much tricked Evangeline into going to New York with her for a job that didn’t exist. She found herself living with three vampires and were-beasts in the shape of huge dogs. One of them, Max becomes her protector and a good friend with a funny personality at times. And oh yeah, he talks in Evangeline’s mind. He ended up being one of my favorite characters. From the beginning, she goes to another world in her dreams, a world where the only inhabitants are vampires, but one that closely mirrors our world. The human population has been completely wiped out by vampires. She meets and befriends a small group of vampires and one of them, Caden, ends up being the one she falls in love with. A magical necklace that Sophia put around her neck keeps her safe from vampires.

This time around, Evangeline has managed to bring back her group of friends, not knowing that about forty others have come along for the ride. Not good news, since they haven’t tasted human blood in seven hundred years. Sophia has locked them all in the mansion that she and the two old (and horrible)vampires live in. Big problem? If they feed off each other, they morph into something that CAN and WILL escape. And what they morph into is not pretty. Sophia sends Evangeline magically away from the melee that’s happening at her home. She ends up in a cabin in the middle of a Siberian winter along with most of the humans(staff and visitors) from the New York home. Think things can’t happen in the middle of nowhere? Think again!

The story is told from two points of view this time. We get both Evangeline’s and Sophie’s POV’s. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like hearing from Sophie’s POV, but it really worked and we really understand a lot more about Sophie and her motivations.

It might seem that I have told a lot about the story, but not so much about the second book actually. There’s so much going on in this book. We have evil witches, not so evil witches, evil vampires, and not so evil vampires involved. There’s even a secret society who’s sole purpose is to eradicate vampires. K.T. Tucker writes a tight story, that is very well written with good characters. I would say that this is for older young adults and adults, due to the amount of violence. I really liked it and will be reading the next one as soon as my tbr pile will allow me to.

Asylum Causal Enchantment Series K A Tucker Books Reviews

4 1/2 Stars.... I know, some people just hate those pesky 1/2 stars, but sometimes there's just no getting around it....

I would imagine that at least a few people reading this didn’t even know that K.A. Tucker had written a series before Ten Tiny Breaths. I’ve read the first two books in that series and loved them. My first introduction to this author’s talented writing came from this series though. From the first time I read Anathema, I was hooked. Putting the Causal Enchantment series on my Seriously Series reading list was inevitable.

Asylum begins where Anathema ended. Even though it’s been a while since I read the first book in the series, it didn’t take me long to catch up. I wouldn’t recommend leaving a long time span between the two though, because a lot happens. There are twists and turns and the players change from chapter to chapter. What made it even more complicated was the fact that there were not only two POV to follow, but those characters were in two totally different venues. Sofie sent Evangeline away to keep her safe, but neither one of them had any real idea of what was going on with the other. Each character had their own drama going on and danger to ward off. They also had to learn to put their trust in others and form allies where they never expected to and in some cases probably shouldn’t have. Yes, things were complicated.

Only one thing kept me from giving Asylum a full 5 stars…. I loved the characters, the story kept me interested and on the edge of my seat the closer it got to the end and even though it ended in a cliff hanger that I kind of saw coming, it wasn’t nearly as jaw dropping as the end of Anathema (I still purchased the next book before I was finished… just in case.) What held back that last 1/2 star was Evangeline. She made a rash decision that pretty much changed everything (not to mention keeping some pretty volatile secrets that will more than likely endanger her even more.) I understand why she did what she did, something had to happen… I just wish there was another way. *sigh* I suppose I’ll just have to trust the author to fix this in the next two books. ;) Allegiance is next, so stay tuned!
I have mixed feelings about Asylum. It was quite a bit shorter than Anathema which I thought was good, but it did not have ANY romance which I thought was bad. The love story is what I loved so much about the first one and this one was just drama and character development, which is common for a second book, if not a little boring.

Evangeline spends 90% of the story bored in the cabin with Julian, Leo and Max. She had one dream that placed her in the same room as Caden, and I was hoping this was going to continue, but it didn't. Julian and Evangeline become good friends but no triangle is set in place, and honestly, nothing really happens in their story line.

Sophie has her hands full back at Viggo and Mortimer's house with the hungry vampires and the People's Sentinels determined to kill all witches and Vampires. Viggo and Mortimer conspire against her when she won't sacrifice Evangeline's life for Veronique's or tell them where she hid Evangeline. Mage, the leader of the vampires on Ratheus, plays a major role in the story and isn't who she appears to be. There is a lot of magical warfare and loved characters do die, so be prepared for tragedy (and no romance)!

K. A. Tucker created another imaginative story that was well paced and full of action. I personally would have liked it better if Evangeline could have at least continued to visit Caden in her dreams and continued on the star crossed love story. That would have made this a five star book for me.

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes (2.99)
Would I read it again? No
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes
