I bought this book at a literacy book signing in San Diego in July, and just finally got to read it. "Sam's Gift" and "Amy's Wish" are two beautifully written stories about heartache and longing, and coming alive again when a "bug" gets into your heart. The wordplay in "Sam's Gift" is funny and touching, and both Lizzie and Amy are delightful heroines with a witty turn of phrase.
"Sam's Gift" is set in NYC. Jake lost Sam when the South Tower went down on 9/11, and his life turned gray...until 8 years later, an unusual manuscript, smelling faintly of pizza, is shoved under his office door, and he reaches out to Lizzie, the author. I truly loved this story.
"Amy's Wish" is a story about how sometimes family can be unrelentingly unforgiving, and what seems true to 9-year-old Amy can be finally understood 18 years later...with the help of Eric, a man who is learning alcohol won't solve his problems. Amy is also a writer, and Eric works for Jake of "Sam's Gift."
Joan Bird spins a wonderful tale filled with wit, class, and intelligence.
