The theme of this book (besides Winter) is good old fashioned suspenseful horror. The middle tale was my favorite, it felt so real. I've never been ice fishing but it all rang true: and then the horror begins. This story made me feel cold and terrified. Three good horror stories.

The Dead of Winter Seasons of the Dead Volume 1 Rob Smales Robert Helmbrecht 9780615904764 Books Reviews

Plain and simple it was great! The 3 stories kept me on the edge of my seat. It felt like I was in the stories.
I can't wait for the next book to come out.
This is a great read loved it start to finish! It was short easy lost weekend kind of read. Well written and well developed short stories I look forward to see what this writer does next! For the horror lovers in the world something new and fresh.
Author Rob Smales gives us a trio of wintery tales that do indeed chill your bones. While it's hard to come up with much of anything new in a ghost story, the important thing is giving us characters that are real and that matter, and Smales does both. He makes the stories sufficiently creepy. What he does best is to put the reader right into the story, using all the senses. We feel the cold, the terror, the lack of breath, the absolute panic. A well-done effort that makes you want to see what the other seasons will bring.
This is the first book in a new series called Seasons of the Dead from Rob Smales. The Dead of Winter features three novella/ short stories. Each one is a ghost story, but the hauntings and outcomes are all very different. The first, "The Christmas Spirit," is a story about a protective ghost and the child-like belief in magic, Santa, and all things wondrous. "Fishing Hole" is a radical 180 about revenge, terror, and alpha male culture. "Snowbirds" examines that delicate line between the ghosts of our past and the unreality of our present as the two worlds collide. Smales is a fantastic writer. His stories capture the Gothic tone and atmosphere so well. The fear is real. It follows you into the dark night long after the last page.

In The Dead of Winter, author Rob Smales presents three short works of horror for our reading pleasure.

In the Christmas Spirit, Beth cares for her twin boys and writes stories for children. Her husband Randy works long hours as a postal worker. When odd, unexplainable events take place with a holiday theme, Beth and Randy are terrified.

In the Fishing Hole, Mark, Jerry, and Bam are ice fisherman. Inebriated racist Bam invites, Juan, aka Johnny. In spite of warnings from others, Johnny insists on going on the outing.

Snowbirds fly south for the winter and return north when the weather's more seasonable. Paul and his wife Allison spend a Christmas in Florida with the grandchildren. Things take a strange turn for the Snowbirds.

These three well-written tales will make you shiver as you huddle in bed under the quilts, reading them. Did you hear that noise? Your hands shake. It's--
I once read an interview with a horror author and he argued that a story wasn’t really horror if it did not have a lot of blood, guts, and brutality in it. Rob Smales takes that idea and not only throws it out the window, but he demolishes it. His collection, The Dead of Winter, is an elegant, disturbing, and poignant look into the world of ghostly apparitions.

The Dead of Winter is the first in a series of novella collections. Each of the stories here is set in the winter, and each reflects some element of fear brought on by the season. In “The Christmas Spirit,” Smales channels a little Charles Dickens with what is initially the horrifying discovery of a ghost. As the narrative unfolds, however, we realize the story is actually about that magical period of belief and wonder we all experience in childhood. “Fishing Hole” take a one hundred and eighty degree turn to explore vengeance and hatred; all without a trace of evisceration or spilled guts. “Snowbirds” is a haunting tale rife with sadness, and laced with a strong undercurrent of fear.

Smales is an elegant writer. His prose lures the reader into a place both comforting and unsettling. We are his characters. We know their lives, their fears, and their nightmares. His world is our world. Safe, secure, and warm on the inside, but as the title suggests, the cold of winter is always trying to dig in to freeze our marrow. Sometimes we survive, and sometimes we wish wouldn’t have.
This collection of three short stories did NOT disappoint. His writing was vividly descriptive, and the stories felt very realistic- I could easily imagine myself in them, or imagine hearing about it in a newscast. I'm excited to keep my eyes out for new books from Mr. Smales!
