I downloaded this for my Kindle when it was on a freebie list a few weeks ago. The synopsis sounded good, and for free I thought why not. It took awhile, but I finally got around to reading this novel, and once I started I didn't put it down until the last sentence was read in the wee hours of the morning. It's been some time since I've come across a book that is worth losing sleep for, and this one certainly was.

This isn't a typical YA fantasy/scifi/para story like the multitude of vampire or witch or werewolf or mermaid themes that fill bookshelves in stores currently. When after a couple of chapters it became apparent that this wasn't yet another entry into the aforementioned themes, I was downright giddy. And then to find out there wasn't a standard issue love triangle? I wanted to find the author and buy her dinner.

Cobbogoth is a smoothly paced story that takes the time to flesh out the main characters and give readers enough background information so we know the impetus behind the plot line. The main character Norah was quite likable and balanced - not über over confident nor someone who needed to be saved from the bad guys (and herself) every other page. The relationship she had with James was one of the most organic I've read about in a long time. No insta-love here. I enjoyed very much the author's use of Icelandic culture and geology. Definitely not something you read about very often in fiction novels, and a wonderful way to put hooks into the reader's interest. Sorry for being cheap with the details, but this novel is, well, novel, and deserves a chance to be read without someone spoiling the fun.

There were a couple editing errors and misspelled words, but nothing that would throw your mind completely out of the story. Pacing is excellent, and the length was short compared to a lot of novels. This worked in the story's favor, though. She could have loaded this thing down with way too much detail and information, but she didn't. Her restraint made every detail she did give that much more important, so as you read you take the time to store that info because it will be needed in later pages.

The author also has a blog and Facebook page for this series. The blog was full of pictures of the places mentioned in the book, which added to the enjoyment of the book for me (even though I usually prefer to let my imagination fill in all the details). In this case, the pictures just make the mental imagery that much more vivid. With the geological references so frequent (various stones), it would be great if down the road the author put up some sort of codex for the numerous stones and minerals she uses in the story. I truly did enjoy this book. It's something new and inventive, and I eagerly await the next book.

**For a YA book, it's really, really low on the sex (kissing only) and swearing scales. There's some violence and descriptive scenes of deceased people that may make some readers a tad bit nauseous. 12yo+ (with parental warning about the first few chapters - one victim is burned to death and this might be upsetting or a bit too descriptive for some younger readers.)

A friend of mine recommended this book written by her cousin so I checked it out and I was so pleased! I love this book. I can't wait to read the next one coming in December and I am encouraging my daughter to read it as well. If you like fantasy with a little mix of science this book is perfect. I had such a hard time putting this book down just so I could deal with real life and working on promoting my own book. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book.
Norah doesn't understand what is happening too her or why she is so drawn to the boy next door. She does know that whatever her uncle was working on is much much more important to her survival than she ever imagined and she needs to discover just what he was doing. I liked this book because it was well written and easy to read. The characters seemed believeable and the story didn't jump around. I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone under 14, due to some rather graphic violence.
When you pick up a fantasy book you want to be taken away - somewhere far away. This story does not disappoint. Norah grows up really fast when she comes home from college to find her Uncle Jack dead...murdered. Taking off where he left of in his archeological myth busting, Norah follows the clues Uncle Jack left for her to find the ancient people of Cobbogoth. When all is said and done Norah finds more than she could have possibly hoped for. And so she begins, A Whole New Life.
I wish I could give this 4.5 stars. The only real flaws were extremely irritating and detracted from the great pleasure I could have had from this book. It seems that the editor didn't care enough about it to correct all the misspellings. How could someone who writes so fluidly and gracefully actually spell "all right" as "alright" and assume that once through spellcheck is going to do the work of a proofreader? It drove me crazy.

But if greater care had been taken with the final product, I would happily have assigned 5 stars to this wonderful tale. It is a marvelous story, full of highly imaginative situations, and it is well told. I read it in an afternoon, completely absorbed and unable to put it down.

author Hannah L. Clark's debut novel is an exciting fantasy adventure. filled with magic, mystery, intrigue, secrets and suspense, this book kept me reading well past my bedtime again. it reminded me somehow of Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth but Cobbogoth's plot is totally different.
the author's worldbuilding and imagery are equally impressive. i also loved how Ms. Clark used and integrated crystals and minerals into the storyline.
there are also beautiful illustrations throughout which marked chapters and pages.
overall, this novel is a remarkable piece of work and it comes highly recommended.
