The Genius and the Muse Elizabeth Hunter 9781475119053 Books

What is there to say? Another Great story from Elizabeth Hunter. This time in the form of contemporary romance, without any paranormal elements. There was; however, a great mystery, a great love story, and unexpected twists that made the story very enjoyable for this reader.

Nothing quite holds a candle to her paranormal Elemental stories, but this book was still very good. This is probably my bias talking as I don't typically go for contemporary romances. However, when I saw that it was from Ms. Hunter, I decided to grab it. I was not disappointed.

The Genius and the Muse Elizabeth Hunter 9781475119053 Books Reviews

I was so fearful to read this book. I consider myself a HUGE fan of Elizabeth Hunters writing (I would say that I am her biggest fan, but I know many who would fight for for the honor of that title!!) But this is a genre that I hadn't read from her before, so I was tentative when starting it. How could someone who is unbeatable in the UF/PNR genre be that good in contemporary romance? But I had nothing left that she had written and this was it, so I thought I'd give it a go. And as usual, she blew it out of the water! What a heartfelt story I found! The characters were so well developed and the story really touched my heart. I actually cried with this book, its beauty and the artistic setting really spoke to me. Javi and Kate's story took my by surprise and I am thrilled. And I learned a valuable lesson….NEVER doubt Elizabeth Hunter again!
I'm a doofus. I'm a huge fan of Elizabeth Hunter's work, yet I never read the Genius and the Muse. In a reading lull, I picked it up. What a tremendous, emotion-packed novel! The two focal couples are so finely drawn, it's easy to fall in love with the characters Hunter so carefully crafts. I sure did. Javi and Kate stumble into their relationship, while Reed and Sam are damaged perfection. There's a mystery, too, concerning one of the couples. While this is a spoiler-free zone, the mystery adds a huge thread of tension and drama that kept me turning the pages like mad. Everything about this novel makes me hope that Hunter will revisit these four people again. I sure haven't gotten enough of them.
Where to start and what to say. I'm not your usual contemporary romance reader, so it took me a while to actually start this book. Now I'm thinking why? I couldn't read the pages fast enough to find out what happens.

When I started reading, the subject matter drew me in. I'm not an artist, but I do love photography and I appreciate paintings and sketches. I thought this was going to be about Kate's research on one particular artist, but ended looking into his relationship with the love of his life. This leads her to interviewing his friends, where she meets the brusque tattoo Javi. Here the second plot of the book takes off.

The characters well so well written and in depth, I felt like I was a character too. I was intrigued by the story of Reed and Sam that Kate uncovered. You took the ride with them, all the ups and downs in flash backs. I felt everything that was going on. Anne then there's Javi... When you meet him and get to know him, you just can't help but wish.

Overall, this was an awesomely written book, with a live story for the ages. Makes you wish we could all find someone who 'just gotta me'.
This is my second book by author Elizabeth Hunter. The first I read, "Ink", left me with an overall warm, fuzzy feeling that I loved. This book felt so different, but I still devoured it. The Genius and The Muse has a bit of a mystery to it that takes the main character, Kate, on a journey of discovery. I do not want to give any spoilers, but there are two stories going on in this book. The author seamlessly jumps from past to present and in between the two stories, and with each chapter a new perspective is revealed. I loved the way the chapters/parts of the book are organized. This book had me in tears several times, but it was so worth it! Loved all the characters and cannot recommend this book highly enough!
This 2012 CR is recently being offered as a free book and I'm glad I found it to read. This is actually a 2-in-1 romance. We have 24-year-old photography student Kate who is writing her thesis on the work of famous but reclusive photographer Reed O'Connor. She becomes obsessed by the man and when she learns her university adviser and his wife were part of a college group of up-and-coming artists including Reed, her curiosity about him as a man goes into overdrive.

The story moves in and out of Kate's present (year 2010) all the way back to 2000 and moves progressively closer to the present in Reed's story. In the present Kate digs up as much information as she can about Reed and his true love/muse, painter Sam Rhodes. They were so in tune with each other, so in love. How could they have possibly broken up? And, in this twofer romance, Kate will also find romance along the way in a very unexpected place.

The characters here are well drawn. The story is actually relatively simple and straightforward and not very unique, but the exposition, moving back and forth in time, turns it into a better, more entertaining read and has an procedural investigation feel to it, although of course it's the investigation of a romance, not a mystery or crime.

I read a few of the 1- and 2-star reviews before actually downloading this book. Obviously they did not discourage me from reading it but the main objection found in most of these critical reviews is actually quite valid. It's the fact that this group of friends of Reed's and Sam's has been closed-mouthed for all the years of the breakup, yet they and even Reed and Sam reveal so much to this relative stranger Kate. There was no real reason why they should have done. And, of course, there's that objection I always have to that trope of a breakup which didn't need to have taken place or which could have been healed relatively quickly with some in-depth conversation between the parties involved.

And no-one in the couple's circle of friends really ever tried to get the estranged lovers back together. Why did it take the interference of a relative stranger, a nosy college student much younger than they? Yet, of course, that's exactly why this story was interesting to read. Kate does her snoopy "private investigation" thing that makes the relationship and its breakdown more compelling than it would have been as a linear romance of Reed and Sam.

One other thing about the story that makes it stand out for me in the CR field is that the characters are all artists (painters, photographers, sculptors) and the art world setting and insights into the creative process are interesting. All in all, this was an imperfect but entertaining story that was worth the read. In particular, Kate's love interest was not your typical HR hero and I found her romance to be out-of-the-romance-box and fun.
What is there to say? Another Great story from Elizabeth Hunter. This time in the form of contemporary romance, without any paranormal elements. There was; however, a great mystery, a great love story, and unexpected twists that made the story very enjoyable for this reader.
