I truly wanted to see and learn more about SEALS, not just Six. There were 9 Seals in Airborne school with me, great guys, superb warriors, a different mindset from we that were Special Forces. But their mission is different, more tactical than SF, virtually no indigenous support mission. I get it!
But the author appears to be writing a novel not a documentary. Perhaps one can make a case that the book could lie somewhere between the two.
But, I have never (Ever!) met an operator who talked like he does. Ever! He devoted an entire chapter on how badass a kid he was in middle and high school. C’mon, Mr Mann, what roll does that play on your book about Six?
And I’ve noticed in nearly all the books written by operators that lots of ink is devoted to telling the reader about each team member’s background and greatness. It seems to be part of the “formula du jour” on operator books. But it’s tiring to hear stuff like your comm specialist is the best one in the entire Navy/military/Army. I could say the same about mine, so this entire discussion becomes one of “I’m/we” are the best...... It becomes boring and certainly repetitive.
And lastly, the high code of decency and dedication and team morality of Seals appears to be BS now that they all seem to violate them (and their confentialty agreement with the Navy) by all the ST-6 books being written.
Were I the Sec Def, I’d shut down their missions and let them think about their jobs versus their literary ambitions.

I'm one of those "man, it would be cool to be a SEAL" kind of guys, but every time I get through a book that recounts the reality of this level of commitment, I'm amazed that there are people out there like Chief Mann who can actually "do it". They put life and limb at risk without second thought - all in the preservation of the freedom and liberties that many of us unfortunately may take for granted (until you read a book like this). Chief Mann's stories are gripping and paint a vivid picture of what it's like be a SEAL (although I'm sure it's only a mere glimpse into the reality that the few who have made it through training truly know).

Full disclosure, there are (many) parts of this book that are redacted for the benefit of security and confidentiality. I know some have posted frustrations with this fact, but by leaving these elements in the book, I believe it lends an air of "mystery" to the reading, as you can't help but wonder just what's behind the black marks that only those who were there will ever know.

If you're into an exciting, real-life read that will leave you feeling grateful for those that have dedicated their lives to protecting us, then this book is definitely for you. Regardless of how you feel about war or your political stance, you cannot deny that we're all sleeping better at night thanks to folks like Chief Mann (even though many never even realize it).
I am a prodigious reader. Additionally, I have read a lot of books on SEALs. In 2012, there are a lot of books available about SEALs. However, I can tell you without exaggeration that this book is not only the best book that I have read on the SEALs, it is one of the best books that I have read all year. Don Mann gives you good information about the training that these guys endure and about the operations that they execute. He does all of this while telling you a very good story about his amazing life. He is a very good writer and I literally hated for this book to end! You feel like you are right there with him during training, and during his missions.

I even got my grandmother to read this book!

Don Mann gives also you a good sense of how life is like as a SEAL. You get a feel for the ups and the downs of life as a SEAL; i.e. the broken marriages.

If you want to know what it is like to be a Navy SEAL, read this book. Don Mann takes you INSIDE the life of a Navy SEAL.

There are some very good SEAL books available. However, this is the best!!!
The first book I read about the SEALs was Chris Kyle's autobiography. That inspired me to read more, much more, about the SEAL's. Each account brings something impressively different. Don Mann's account reminds me somewhat of Adam Brown; both would not exactly have been voted most likely to succeed. In all of these books, there is one underlying thread; an absolute commitment to a cause each considers greater than themselves and an astonishing drive and inner strength. In Don Mann's account, his tenacity borders on shocking; as does his former lifestyle. His story is inspirational and humbling. Not only would I strongly recommend this book, I also highly recommend the many other accounts of these unique individuals. In this book, the only thing I would have liked more would have been able to read the areas blackened out for security reasons. The only thing I ever wanted as much as these men want to be SEALs is to be a husband and father. Thankfully, the requirements for that are much less demanding. Even though I can't really relate to them on a personal level, I honor and appreciate these men and sleep much better knowing they are around.
being an ex-soldier i have always loved to read biographies of former "operators". almost all have been really excellent but i have never read a book like this. while i admire and respect don mann and everything he has done for our country, this book was a waste of time. it is full of so many redactions i had to wonder why i even started it in the first place. having read inside delta force by eric haney, fearless by eric blehm and inside the red circle by brandon webb, (books rich in detail) i so looked forward to this book. alas, i was let down. i finished it in one day because with the redactions i just skipped or browsed thru whole chapters. this is one of those books that probably wanted to cash in the ST6 hype, but really didn't need to be published. read something else, something that will actually entertain you.
